Ning Xin travels to Taohua, a remote village in the Dong ethnic region of China, where her foster father had collected folk songs 30 years ago. The aim of her trip is to fulfill the dying man's wish to record the Grand Opera of the Dong people. In the process, she uncovers a hitherto secret love story between her foster father and a Dong woman which remained unrequited for three decades. Affected by the exotic melodies of the Dong Grand Opera and the visual splendors of the remote landscape, Ning Xin slowly begins to understand why her foster father remained single and waited half a lifetime for the fulfillment of his true love.
